Dipentodontaceae is a family of small mosses that are found in tropical regions around the world. One interesting story about this family involves their unusual mating system. Unlike most plants that rely on pollinators to fertilize their seeds, Dipentodontaceae use a process known as “self-cleaning” to ensure fertilization. The male structures of the plant produce small spores that are released into the air and carried to the female structures by wind. These spores then fertilize the eggs, creating new plants. This adaptation allows Dipentodontaceae to reproduce in areas where pollinators are scarce.
