Berberidaceae

The Berberidaceae family has an interesting story. Its name derives from the genus Berberis, which in turn comes from the Arabic name “barbaris.” Legend has it that the Prophet Mohammed was once walking in the desert when he accidentally pricked his finger on a thorn from a Berberis plant. He was so amazed by its medicinal properties that he declared it a sacred plant. Since then, Berberidaceae plants have been used for their medicinal properties, and they continue to be studied for their potential health benefits.
